The Oakes African-American Cultural Center is home to a museum, which chronicles the 136-year history of the Oakes family in Yazoo City. Originally a one-room structure, it was purchased in 1866 by John and Mary Oakes, an African-American couple from South Carolina. The house, which grew over the years to a regal two-story structure, was home to members of the Oakes family until 1989, when A.J. Oakes, Jr. died. Today, the Oakes house, which was restored in 1990, also serves as a living classroom to educate visitors about local/regional African-American history and contributions during this period.
