Memphis Minnie, blues performer Memphis Minnie, who moved to Walls, Mississippi in 1904 around the age of 7, is considered by many to be the best female blues singer of all time. After receiving her first guitar for Christmas in 1905, Minnie (born Lizzie Douglas) fell in love with music and soon mastered the banjo and her voice. She was among the first twenty performers elected to the Hall of Fame in the inaugural W. C. Handy awards in 1980. Her grave is located at New Hope M.B. Jerry Lee Lewis, entertainer With such hit singles as "Whole Lotta Shaking Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire", Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Lee Lewis was a pioneer of the rock and roll movement. He now resides in Nesbit, a small community in DeSoto County, Mississippi and, while his home is not currently open for tours, the "Killer's" legendary piano shaped pool is a popular tourist draw. www.desotocountytourism.com
John Grisham, writer John Grisham, who graduated high school in Southaven and came back to his hometown to start a legal practice, drew inspiration from testimony he witnessed in the DeSoto County courthouse which helped him write his first novel A Time to Kill.
