Jim Henson, puppeteer Muppet creator Jim Henson was born in Greenville and raised in Stoneville, just west of Leland. As a child he spent hours playing along the banks of Deer Creek, where the character of Kermit the Frog was inspired. Today, you can visit the Birthplace of Kermit the Frog museum and learn more about Jim Henson and his imaginative creations. www.visitgreenville.org
Shelby Foote, historian Born in Greenville in 1917, noted historian Shelby Foote is best known for The Civil War: A Narrative that took him 20 years to compose. In 1990, he participated in Ken Burns' documentary, The Civil War, which gained him icon status as an authoritarian on the Civil War. The Greenville Writers' Exhibit, at the William Alexander Percy Library, houses original manuscripts and documents the accomplishments of many writers including Foote, Hodding Carter, William Alexander Percy, Ellen Douglas and many more of the 100 published writers who made Greenville home in the 20th century. www.visitgreenville.org
