Delta Travel Diary
B.B. King, blues musician Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, just outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola. Playing on street corners for dimes, B.B. (Blues Boy) King would often play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night. At age 22, armed with his guitar and $2.50, B.B. hitchhiked to Memphis to pursue his musical career. Along that path, with the help of legendary blues musicians and the talent to make a guitar sing, B.B. King became and remains the King of the Blues. Indianola will soon celebrate the opening of the B. B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center dedicated to the establishment of a museum honoring B. B. King, which tells his life's story of hardship, perseverance, talent and humility as a way to further the arts, youth development, and racial reconciliation in the Mississippi Delta and beyond. www.bbkingmuseum.org
