Delta Travel Diary

The Blue and White Restaurant in Tunica offers some of the best fresh vegetables in the Delta.
|
Dusk was overtaking the Mississippi Delta as I worked my way south down Highway 61. I was becoming accustomed to the vast expanses of rich, flat farmland in front of me when, with little warning, rose an oasis of neon wrapped buildings of every description. This was Tunica, and I was impressed.
Casinos in Tunica, Mississippi
Born just a decade ago, Tunica has quickly gained a national reputation as a premier
resort destination. I had my choice of nine, big-time casinos, each with its own theme. These Las Vegas-style casinos offered top-name entertainers, exceptional food, and a friendly atmosphere. They tell me that Tunica has more than 14,000 slots and electronic games, not to mention 400 table games. And the accommodations are exceptional. More than 6,300 new hotel suites and rooms.
Fine Dining, Buffets, Outdoor Eateries, & More
Good food is easy to find in Tunica. Hungry from my drive, I feasted at one of the many outstanding buffets. Other, more romantically inclined guests were dining by candlelight. Tunica offers plenty of choices, and at pleasing prices.

Downtown Tunica offers a variety of boutiques and antique shops with small-town charm.

Golf Tunica Style: Championship Courses with a Southern Flair
I'm glad I remembered my golf clubs because this place has some great championship courses
providing year-round play for both pros and beginners, like me. A new tennis center here features the latest court surfaces. And for those who want to take aim at something a little different, there's the challenge of sporting clays. (Did I mention that Tunica is located in one of the South's best hunting locales?)
Specialty and Outlet Shopping
Since shopping was on my agenda, I hit the Casino Factory Shoppes, a collection of 30 brand-name outlet stores. Downtown Tunica also offered a variety of boutiques and antique shops with small-town charm. The gift shops and specialty stores at the casino resorts were nice as well.
Historic Attractions
So much to see here. Tunica's historic
attractions include Bluesville,
an award-winning museum featuring
the history of the Blues; the Tunica Museum, with history spanning from Native Americans to the Civil War; and The River, depicting the vital role of the Mississippi River in American history.

Tunica's stunning new RiverPark & Museum on the Mississippi

Visit the RiverPark & the Tunica Queen
Before leaving, I made sure to stop at Tunica's stunning new
RiverPark. This is the nation's newest spot to learn about "The River That Made America." The Mississippi River is both fascinating and daunting. RiverPark, with its museum, interactive center and river ecotrail helped me to better understand this waterway. Of course a visit to the Mississippi River wouldn't be complete without a river ride on the new Tunica Queen riverboat. What a trip.
Time to tame the road again. Next stop: Clarksdale, Mississippi.
