Willie Morris, writer An American writer and editor, Willie Morris often wrote about his hometown of Yazoo City, Mississippi which he moved to at the early age of 6 months. A Rhodes scholar, Morris started his literary career in the magazine industry as the editor of the Texas Observer and then went on to become the youngest editor of Harper's Magazine. Morris then penned an autobiographical look at his life in the American South and other works of fiction including My Dog Skip, which was made into a movie. Morris is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City where his grave is located just a few steps from the grave of the fictitious "Witch of Yazoo", a character from his book Good Old Boy. www.yazoo.org
Jerry Clower, comedian A popular country comedian, Jerry Clower, was a fertilizer salesman in Yazoo County with a knack for telling a funny story and making a sell. After taping a speaking engagement, which found its way on to the radio, Jerry Clower's career exploded and spun into audio recordings, books and live performances. The Triangle Cultural Center in downtown Yazoo City displays a collection of Jerry Clower memorabilia. www.yazoo.org
Willie Brown An undrafted rookie out of Grambling College in 1963, it took Willie Brown all of six professional games to establish himself as a starting cornerback going on to be named all-NFL in his second season. Remembered mainly as a stellar cornerback for the Raiders who returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in Super Bowl XI, Brown was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984. www.yazoo.org
Teddy Bears, famous child's toy In the year 1902, the idea for the teddy bear was formed when President Teddy Roosevelt went on a bear hunt in the Mississippi Delta. and refused to shoot a bear. The story was told in the form of political cartoons that sparked the imagination of Morris Michtom who asked his wife to create a bear to commemorate the story. The popularity of the bear led to the highly successful Ideal Novelty and Toy Company in New York, founded by Michtom around 1903. www.yazoo.org
